missing the start

Ok I get it, people who started as athletes, trained right, ate right, stayed setback free and had a little luck from the “athletic gods” can maintain athletic prowess like a sun set. Dwindling yes, but brilliant in its own right, even at its last moment, fading away, it is still beautiful to watch. So if you start in shape, stay in shape, then you can maintain shape for a long period of time, and depreciate respectably even into your twilight years. However, I'm 36 and never was an athlete. I'm not that strong, not that fast and i dont think it is possible to really work on that. Can I get faster, stronger and build muscle mass?
